Cerro Lec, the current state.

"Cerro Lec", 24th of July 2011

An update on Cerro Lec, the little, deforested mountain situated behind the ex- bridge after Patanatic (to San Andres Semetabaj).

June 10th, 2010

Cerro Lec is no more, the part that i observed many times during my walks to Tierra Linda, that was partly collapsing, has completely crumbled. Main concern this week was a "laguna" that formed behind (whats left) of Cerro Lec and i was surprised to see that it’s not that big. At the moment the water that is left is being drained out. Alongside the drainage pipes they are digging out a trench of some meters deep, it looks like it will be ready within days so water can flow down the mountain towards the San Francisco river once again. The trench is narrow, but will be widened by the water running through, that will take the leftovers of Cerro Lec down to the river over the coming years/decades.

The biggest danger at the moment lies with the commuters passing over the rumble of Cerro Lec, where the bridge used to be, to get to their work. They will all return home at the end of the day, whether it is raining or not. It’s easy to analyze that various small deslaves are to be expected this and the coming season, right where the people are passing, throughout the day.

Leftovers of Cerro Lec pose a direct danger to people commuting between Panajachel/Patanatic and San Andres. “Poco a Poco”, rain will take care of what is left of Cerro Lec, but without a new bridge, lives could (probably will!) be lost. The new bridge has to be a lot bigger and it will take years fund and build. Closing the current passage is probably the safest thing to do, but also an economic punishment for the people using and needing it.

Update: "Cerro Lec" the 29th of June 2010

A part of Cerro Lec has tumbled into the ravine. As of the 29th no passage is possible, not even on foot. A machine worked on making a new path towards the other side of the ravine. Any small bridge made will be a dangerous one because of the loose sand on both sides of the ravine. Nothing seems to be safe until they blow up the remains of what is bound to come down anyways. Or clean it out with machines, which is very dangerous as you see on the video below. In the end “everything” has to “flush” through to the San Francisco river, all of it has to go. Or you can wait until nature does it for us.

Update: "Cerro Lec" the 17th of June, 2010

The bridge moved to a new location. Some photos and videos shot from above. You can see water coming out of Cerro Lec, on the side where the Panajachel Trash dump is located. The trash dump is about 100 meters from the point where the mountain is crumbling. Me thinks it will all go down in a few decades (during "normal" weather). There are some photos included of people working/living at the trash dump. They helped me showing me the places between the trash dump and the ravine where the ground shows openings and down at the base where a watersource started bubbling up since the day before. Also showing workers from Covial.

gosh, glad it all came down together. now, if only the gov. is able to get a new bridge in place!!

Cerro Lec has changed. Rainfall this week caused other deslaves, the bridge you see on the photo is not usable anymore. Covial is working at dangerous places to make sure the "Laguna" does not fill up. Yesterday the 16th of june they managed to drain the last water out.

Not good, water is now coming out of the remains of Cerro Lec, at different spots then just where the river breaks through.

This might pose a danger to the Panajachel garbage dump.

While cleaning the road on 23rd of July 2011, at least 1 covial worker lost his life when a mud stream swept his machine of the road into a ravine.
