29th May, Panajachel

Que triste! Hurricane season has yet to start but on Saturday the 29th of May Guatemala suffered more from one rainy afternoon than we did in the last 4 seasons together, the whole country was affected. Impressing  too first see this pictures on television, the water running through Xela that afternoon, pickups half way up in the water.

At about 6 o clock i was looking at the same picture, but from my “doorstep”. In the street to Las Manos, at the height of “Puente” Tzala, the water from the waterfall collided with the “river” running down the street. Pickups in that area completely disappeared under the water. The mud and rocks, coming down from the waterfall, damaged or completely destroyed some houses. Many more, most in or close to the riverbed, got damaged or destroyed that Saturday. The three small bridges are gone and the new Friendship bridge is seriously damaged, although with luck it will be open again this week. The old yellow bridge (Ubico) is fine. But with more rain it might easily sustain damage. The houses close to the bridge down there in the riverbed were “okay”, parts of the protection walls came down.

Lets see how the rest of the season continues.
